Digital technologies are drastically changing the way our food is produced. Increasingly complex processes are being automated and farm management software, offering monitoring and decision support, is gaining importance. This development is not limited to large-scale farming operations, but also takes place in mid-sized, family-run farms in Austria.
Which changes will these developments bring along? How should these changes be evaluated from an ethical perspective? Now is the time for shaping the future trajectory of digitalized agriculture. We thus aim to identify the ethical questions stakeholders should ask themselves.

Simone van der Burg is a philosopher and ethics expert adressing digital technologies in agriculture and values and interests of the various stakeholders therein. She will present one of her recent publications: “Ethics of smart farming: Current questions and directions for responsible innovation towards the future”.
Michael Iwersen is agricultural engineer and veterinary doctor for animal reproduction. His research focuses on modern herd health management of ruminants. Iwersen recently published various articles on "Precision Livestock Farming", see here
